Star Wars: The Force Awakens posted an estimated $286.8 million globally ($153.5 million domestically and $133.3 million overseas) in its second weekend to cross the $1 billion global mark with $1.090 billion in record time on Sunday, Dec. 27, its 12th day in global release. It’s the latest of many industry records set by the film, which has earned an estimated $545 million domestically in 10 days and $546 million internationally in 12 days (excluding China, where the film opens Jan. 9).

Domestic records include biggest domestic and biggest December debut of all time ($247.9 million); biggest Sunday ($60.5 million), Monday ($40.1 million), Tuesday ($37.3 million), and Christmas Day ($49.3 million); and fastest film to reach $100 million (1 day), $200 million (2 days), $300 million (5 days), $400 million (8 days), and $500 million (10 days).
Global and international records include biggest worldwide debut ($529 million); Internationally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already the #6 movie of 2015 to date, and globally Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already the #5 movie of 2015 to date and the #15 movie of all-time.
IMAX’s global box office for Star Wars: The Force Awakens delivered a worldwide holiday weekend of $27.5M, on 673 IMAX screens, taking the global cume of $106 million in record time: 12 days (without a China release) vs. Jurassic World, which took 18 days to reach $100 million (with a day and date China release). The North American total will come to $70 million inside 11 days (faster than previous quickest, Avatar’s 30 days).

In North America, Paramount Pictures’ new comedy Daddy’s Home earned an estimated $38.8 million in second place from 3,271 theaters, a strong average of $11,862 per theater. The movie is distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Fourth place belonged to Universal’s comedy Sisters, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, which added $13.9 million in 2,962 theaters for a total of $37.2 million after two weeks. The movie cost just $30 million to make.
Rounding out the top five was 20th Century Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, which took in $12.7 million its second weekend and has earned $39.4 million so far.
Sony Pictures’ Concussion, starring Will Smith, debuted in sixth with $11 million from 2,841 theaters, an average of $3,872 per theater. The drama was made for $35 million and received an A CinemaScore.

Paramount’s The Big Short earned $10.5 million its third weekend and has collected $16 million so far on a $28-million budget.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ Point Break remake, starring Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey, opened in eighth place with $10.2 million from 2,910 theaters, an average of $3,512 per theater.
In limited release, Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight brought in $4.5 million from 100 theaters, an average of $45,366, while Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant earned $471,000 from just four theaters, an average of $117,750 per theater.
